Subaru and Toyota are working together to develop a new all-electric SUV. It would use Toyota’s battery technology, and according to Car and Driver, it will use a solid-state battery pack, making it a game-changer for electric vehicles. Solid-state batteries charge faster and have a longer range than conventional lithium-ion batteries in the same size bag.
The new EV SUV will use Toyota technology, but it will be “distinctly Subaru,” according to Subaru. The automaker hasn’t said anything about it yet, but it’s safe to assume it’ll integrate Subaru’s core values. Safety, fun-to-drive, all-weather capability, off-pavement capability, and a low center-of-gravity are among those values.
Subaru will release an all-electric SUV in 2022.
Subaru will still have extra safety features in all of its models, including its first-ever all-electric SUV. Despite riding on Toyota’s e-TNGA modular platform, the 2022 Subaru EV will receive top IIHS safety ratings.
The new electric vehicle would be enjoyable to drive and have a low centre of gravity. The new EV SUV will be around the size of a Forester and manoeuvrable in city commuting, similar to the new 2022 BRZ sports coupe, which was also built with Toyota. Subaru would most likely use a continuously variable automatic transmission with paddle shifters on the steering wheel to increase driver interaction.
All-wheel drive will be standard on one trim level of the new Subaru EV, and a front-drive variant will be available for city commuters. The primary market for Subaru will be California, which has mountains and warm weather. For off-roading, some consumers would prefer the off-pavement trim, while others will choose front-drive for city commuting.

Aside from all-wheel drive, the upcoming Subaru all-electric in 2022 will have a number of other features. The new vehicle would have extra ground clearance and the opportunity to get away from civilization. It should have a dual-function X-Mode with deep snow and mud settings, a low centre of gravity for better results on steep trails, and a rugged exterior appearance like the Design AG rendering above.
The Subaru all-electric, unlike the 2022 Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR86 twins, will be distinctly Subaru and incorporate its core values. The model’s rugged “go-anywhere” look will also help you recognise it as a Subaru. Subaru’s first all-electric vehicle is expected to arrive in the summer of 2022. Keep an eye out for updates.
